Read Your Manuals
Whether you buy a new or used RV, you should read the manuals provided and become more familiar with the model you purchased so you can become aware of what type of RV maintenance you should do regularly.
As an RV owner, you should check the RV oil and filter, coolant tires, brakes, suspension, and electrical connections. Some of the other important tips for RV storage include checking the cooling system, inspecting all the seals, cleaning the exterior, and filling all the tires to the correct amount of air pressure.
Check Your Tiles and Wheels
Tiles should be inspected periodically for missing or loose grout and any surface cracks. These areas should be sealed or repaired by a professional to ensure the RV remains watertight.
Wheels should also be checked for uneven tire pressure, worn tread, and corrosion. Take the tires off at least once a year and check for any debris, wheel rims for deformation, and axle bearings for any wear or damage.
Check the Electrical Connection From Your RV to Tow Vehicle
When caring for your RV, you should check for tight connections, damage to terminals, and frayed or worn electrical cables. Ensure all applicable fasteners are tight and properly adjusted.
Check fuses and breakers to ensure they are working properly. Make sure you have the right fuse and circuit protection in place to avoid blowouts and incidences of shock.
Check Your Batteries
New RV owners should take time to carefully check their batteries before taking their RV on a long road trip. Inspect the battery case for any signs of dampness, corrosion, or cracks. Then, check the electrolyte with a hydrometer.
There should be at least 1.265-1.280 specific gravity for a 12-volt battery. Monitor the charge level of the battery by using a voltmeter or hydrometer.
Deep Clean Your Interior
Deep cleaning of the interior of your RV is important. Begin by removing any items that are not necessary for your trip. Check furniture and curtains for dust, dirt, and grime, and vacuum or spot clean as needed.
Clean the floors and consider whether they should be sealed or waxed. Remove cobwebs from the interior and use a mildew cleaner for any mildew on the walls or carpets.
Get an Oil Change
Oil changes are an important part of that checklist. Ensure you get an oil change for the RV as soon as possible. For best results, make sure you make oil changes every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first.
Depending on the type of oil used, you may be able to extend the interval up to 5,000 miles.
