Since it launched in 2000, Counter Strike has been one of the most popular computer games on the planet. Despite being a popular series for over two decades, new Counter Strike releases are rare. This is why players are extremely excited about the launch of Counter Strike 2 this summer.
The current version of Counter Strike works on both Mac and Windows computers. This is somewhat exceptional as official support for Mac gaming is rare. This means many Mac players are worried about Counter Strike 2 and whether or not it will work on their Mac.
So, will you be able to enjoy Counter Strike 2 Mac gameplay? Read on to find out.
What is Counter Strike?
Counter Strike is one of the most popular shooter games of all time. The premise behind the game is simple. A team of terrorists faces off against a team of counter terrorists. You can win around by either eliminating the enemy team or by completing your objective.
The objective each team needs to complete depends on the game mode. The most popular game mode in counter strike video games is easily the bomb defuse mode. In this game type, the terrorists need to plant a bomb at one of two sites on the map.
Once the terrorists plant the bomb, a countdown starts. When the countdown hits zero, the bomb explodes, and the terrorists win the round. The counter-terrorists can win the game by reaching the bomb and defusing it.
There is also another game mode called hostage rescue. In this game, the counter-terrorists need to locate hostages and bring them to an extraction point. The terrorists need to prevent the counter-terrorists from achieving this goal. There are also more casual game modes available such as deathmatch, where the only goal is to kill your opponents.
What is Counter Strike 2?
Counter Strike 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Counter Strike: Global Offensive. As far as game sequels go, Counter Strike 2 is interesting because it will replace Counter Strike: Global Offensive.
Once Counter Strike 2 launches, players will no longer be able to play Global Offensive. The good news for Counter Strike fans is that the game won’t change the winning Counter Strike formula. The core gameplay will largely be the same, but there will be some very significant upgrades.
For example, perhaps one of the biggest changes will be to the net code. Counter Strike 2 uses a sub-tick system that offers unprecedented synchronization between players. This means Counter Strike 2 will feel much more responsive than other online first-person shooter games.
Another welcome addition is the changes to smoke physics. In Counter Strike players can deploy smoke grenades to block enemy vision. In high-level play, effective deployment of smoke is crucial to victory.
In Counter Strike 2, the smoke will behave differently, creating a whole new gameplay dynamic. For example, if you shoot into a cloud of smoke, the smoke will briefly clear. Alternatively, if you throw a grenade at a cloud of smoke, the smoke will dissipate significantly.
While the changes to smoke physics may not sound like much, they could actually have a huge impact on how people play the game.
One of the most popular features of Counter Strike is the ability to open CSGO cases to unlock weapon skins. The good news is that all the skins you’ve earned in the previous game will be available to you in the new game. With the new graphics updates, your skins will probably look better than ever.
Counter Strike 2 Mac Support
If you’re someone who plays Counter Strike on a Mac, you might be worried about whether or not it will be possible to play Counter Strike 2. The current iteration of Counter Strike does work on Macs, so it’s quite likely the new version will work on Macs as well.
As mentioned, Counter Strike 2 is more than a sequel to Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Counter Strike 2 will actually replace the previous game. If the new version of the game doesn’t work on Mac, this will prevent thousands of Mac players from being able to play the game. It seems very unlikely this would ever happen.
While Valve (Counter Strike’s developers) have not made any official statement about whether or not Counter Strike 2 will be available on Mac, most players in the Mac community expect to see a Mac version. It’s likely that the Mac version will release alongside the Windows version of the game.
Worst Case Scenario
In the unlikely event that Valve chooses not to release Counter Strike 2 on Mac, all is not lost. It’s still possible to play games intended for Windows users by installing something like Boot Camp on your Mac.
Boot camp is a tool that allows you to run Windows on a Mac computer. The downside to using this is that it uses a lot of system resources. This means you’ll need a reasonably powerful Mac to run Counter Strike 2 using this method.
Thankfully, the system requirements for Counter Strike 2 are not expected to be very high. This is because Counter Strike 2 is replacing the previous version of the game. Global Offensive has very modest system requirements. If the requirements for Counter-Strike 2 are too heavy, the game may lose a lot of players.
Counter Strike 2 Mac Gameplay is Likely
Given that Counter Strike 2 will replace Counter Strike: Global Offensive, it seems very unlikely Valve will abandon the Mac player base. Chances are, a Mac version of the game will launch alongside the Windows version and you’ll be able to enjoy Counter Strike 2 Mac gameplay.
If that doesn’t happen, it’s quite likely Valve will release a Mac version in the near future. In the worst-case scenario, you’ll likely be able to use something like Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac.
